The Global RallyCross champion and former X Games gold medallist, was eliminated in a crash on the opening lap of his rain and mud-hit semi-final at Kouvola, which left his Marklund Motorsport Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar damaged beyond immediate repair.
To compound his frustration, Heikkinen’s early exit in Finland means he slips from third to fourth in the drivers’ table heading to round five at the Höljes Motorstadion close to the Norwegian border in central Sweden. However, the talented 23-year-old is more than capable of bouncing back and will be among the favourites for a strong result in the fifth round of the new-for-2014 World RX series.
”Höljes is really exceptional track,” said Heikkinen. ”It’s very fast and beautiful, a true rallycross track and one of the best in the world. These weeks are special for all of us in the team having three Scandinavian races in a row: Norway first, then Finland and now Sweden. My team-mate Anton [Marklund] and me receive a lot of media attention during these weeks but we really enjoy this time a lot.
”My home race was really disappointing because I came to win but it ended early. Now I have to forget this weekend and concentrate on Höljes where I’ll be more determined than ever to get my World RX title challenge back on track.”
